I was on my SL Facebook account (yes, I have one) a while back and one of my friends had posted a question about soul mates. The question, I think, was whether or not we believed in them and if we only had one in a lifetime. It reminded me of my favorite quote from Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert:
. . . A true soul mate is probably the most important person you’ll ever meet, because they tear down your walls and smack you awake. But to live with a soul mate forever? Nah. Too painful. Soul mates, they come into your life just to reveal another layer of yourself to you, and then leave. . .
In my life, both SL and RL, I’ve had what I’ll refer to as soul mates (notice it’s plural). My longest soul mate is my best friend from college who still puts up with my antics even though we’ve lived thousands of miles apart for almost the past decade. There are those who have come into my life in a romantic sense and even though things didn’t work out, they taught me about myself and still hold a piece of me. Of course, I can’t forget my RL sister who is my “sole sister” because she’s my running buddy and general partner in crime when we’re together.
So, in short… do I believe in soul mates? Sure, there are crazier things in life to believe in. Do I think you ever have just one in a lifetime? No. If you’re lucky then you have several.
